Creators of Agemonia: Cartographer Damien Mammoliti

a short interview during the summer 2020

Everyone knows how maps are such a large part of a game. They both clarify and define the world they are set in and help bring the world to life and to truly become something. The map artist of Agemonia, Damien Mammoliti, sure knows this. An ENnie award-winning artist from Edmonton, Canada, he has worked in breathing life to worlds with his breathtaking cartography work in projects like Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, Brass Lancashire & Birmingham, Pathfinder, Fallout Wasteland Warfare, and many others.

During the summer we asked him some questions in the form of an introduction into his part in making Agemonia a reality.

Who are you and what is your role in the Agemonia project?

My name is Damien Mammoliti, I’m an artist/illustrator on Agemonia, working mainly on maps (world maps, city maps, and campaign/scenario maps). I’ve been working on Agemonia for about 8 months now (time flies!), as the game itself has such a large and complex world, with tons of locations and places for people to end up exploring.

I’ve been working as an illustrator in game and media since about 2009 however, after graduating college I went into the games industry, but also found my way through the tabletop RPG avenue back then, as well!

How did you end up working with Agemonia and what do you feel is the most interesting aspect of the project?

I was contacted by none other than Max himself to check out the project and work with them on developing the world visually. Needless to say, the scope and size of it impressed me, so I decided to join in!

I think the most interesting thing is how narratively strong the game is, even as a board game. It has enough lore and depth to create its own tabletop supplement book, I’m sure! (Maybe one day we’ll get a 5e compatible manual? Hah!)

How does Agemonia stand out amidst its genre?

The sheer size and scope of it is really something to behold. Tons of lore, locations, and places to see that will keep people interested in it for a long time to come.

Are you a game enthusiast (most, if not all of us, tend to be…), and what are your favorite games?

Absolutely! I love video games, board games, tabletop games, you name it. It’s such a great and thriving hobby.

In the tabletop sphere, I’ve always enjoyed board games like Arkham Horror, Santorini, Dice Throne, and Brass. I’m also a big Dungeons & Dragons nerd, so mixing both of these aspects in Agemonia felt right to me!

What are you working on right now (the time of inquiry being during the summer 2020) in Agemonia?

Right now we are getting into the thick of it with scenario maps, I’ll most likely be creating a few new locations for people to explore before maybe diving back into a city map. Time will tell!

We are truly thrilled to have Damien and his creative genius with us in making Agemonia. Stay tuned for more updates on our creators and art!
